Not many businesses have been around for six decades. Fewer still have been headed by a woman for nearly two of them. But Desjardins Jewelers in Manchester can make both claims.

The fine jewelry store was founded in 1944 by Joseph Desjardins, whose knowledge of gems and eye for quality made the store a success. Current owner Jay DeSchuiteneer started working at the store in 1980 as Desjardins' secretary. Within four years, she became Co-owner with business partner Gene Caissie. In May, 2002, Jay became sole owner when Caissie decided to retire.

The jewelry business, says Jay, is similar to the fashion industry. "Like clothing styles, jewelry styles change from one season to the next, too," she says.

While she makes sure Desjardins has the styles people are looking for, she also keeps an eye on future trends. (Today's hot trends include platinum, 18-karat gold and two-tone styles). She is already buying for the fall season and she has several designer shows lined up for September and October.

Jay also says that, like vintage clothing, estate jewelry "is always a better value than new because it was previously owned."

Desjardins Jewelers carries estate pieces from all over the world, many with unique designs. "There's also a bit of legacy there, which adds to the interest," says Jay. For the past several years, Desjardins has focused on one-of-a-kind designer pieces. "We don't have a dozen more back in the safe," says Jay.
